What makes good fire pit wood

Dense hardwood, not softwood. Red Gum is a heavy hardwood — it burns long and steady with fewer refills through the night, and it doesn't throw the sparks pine does. More on the species in our Red Gum guide.
Properly seasoned. Wood below ~20% moisture lights easily, smokes less and gives more heat per log. Ours is seasoned, not green.
Consistent splits. Split wood catches faster than rounds and stacks safely around a pit. We split to a consistent size, load after load.
Clean fuel only. Never burn treated, painted or pallet wood — the fumes are harmful. That's as true in a backyard pit as it is in a pizza oven.

Fire pits in Melbourne: know the rules

Fire pits are a pleasure with a few responsibilities attached. Before you light up:

Check your council rules. Many Melbourne councils regulate open-air burning and smoke — some require permits, some ban open fires in backyards altogether. Your council's website is the authoritative source.
Respect fire restrictions. During the declared Fire Danger Period (and on Total Fire Ban days), open-air fires are restricted or prohibited. Check the CFA before you light.
Be a good neighbour. Seasoned hardwood smoke is minimal; wet wood smoulders and annoys the whole street. Burn dry, split wood and keep flames modest.
Keep it safe. Clear area around the pit, water or hose within reach, never leave it unattended, fully extinguish before bed.

Scheduled top-ups. Fortnightly or monthly runs matched to your occupancy — you're never explaining a cold pit to a booking.
Consistent splits and kindling. Uniform split sizes burn predictably in communal pits; kindling packs make it effortless for guests.
